Learn how to manage and reconstruct wounds effectively on this practical course. First we’ll review the approach to the open wound, concentrating on the key objectives to achieve at each stage of wound healing. We will then demonstrate a practical approach to surgical closure from the pre-surgical planning to successful execution. We will focus on techniques available to general practitioners from straightforward local closure to the options for the more challenging cases. The course will be full of practical tips but will also give you a deep understanding of the requirements for open wound management or planned surgical wound closure.

What you’ll learn

  • Open wounds – initial management and decision-making options
  • Understanding wound healing to become a ‘wound connoisseur’
  • Assessing wounds – determining the options for the easiest closure
  • Surgical oncology – removing tumours with appropriate margins
  • Dealing with excessive skin tension – what can you do?
  • Local flaps – advancement, rotation and transposition flaps
  • Bringing in extra skin – using axial pattern flaps – essential tips
  • Skin grafting – when, where and how you can get the best outcomes
