AD128 Advance25 – GP Refresh Surgery

Advance25^TM Courses help you to develop your knowledge and clinical skills in a defined area of small animal practice. These fully flexible online courses include tutor support and discussion forums. The course materials are all recorded, and you have full access for a 12 month period. The course runs for a six week period, and you’ll get tutor support for a further 2 weeks via the course forum in case you need to catch up. After that, you’ll still have full access to all of your course materials although the tutor support will end. Complete your learning and get your CPD Certificate for 25 Hours of CPD.

This online course in soft tissue surgery is designed for you if you’re a vet in general practice wanting to refresh your basic surgical skills. It’s also for you if you’re a new graduate vet who’d like some very practical help with procedures that you’re likely to perform in everyday practice.

Your Course Content

Session 1

• A Practical Approach to Wounds: What Can We Do?
• How to Approach Cutaneous Masses

We’ll start with wound classification and how to manage different wounds. We’ll cover essential anatomy of the skin, which is the basis of reconstructive surgery. We will finish the session with guidelines on how to approach and treat cutaneous masses that you’re likely to see in your practice.

Session 2

•  Exploratory Laparotomy and Biopsies
• Tips and Tricks for Better Intestinal Surgery

This session will cover how to correctly perform an exploratory laparotomy and how to take biopsies of abdominal organs. We will then move on to how to perform surgery of the intestine with particular focus on enterectomies. We’ll focus on practical tips that will help you to get better outcomes.

Session 3

• Peritonitis
• How to Place Feeding Tubes

This third session will cover the complications of intestinal surgery studying the pathophysiology and management of peritonitis with particular focus on septic peritonitis. We will then cover how to nutritionally support critical patients and which feeding tube should be placed and how.

Session 4

• GDV: Patient Stabilisation and Surgical Management
• Splenectomy and Haemoabdomen

Following a brief overview of the anatomy of the stomach and spleen the session will cover the pathophysiology of GDV, pre- intra- and post-operative management of the patient with gastric dilation and volvulus and we will see how to correctly perform a gastropexy and splenectomy. We will also cover how to manage patients with haemoabdomen.

Session 5

• Surgical Management of Bladder and Urethral Stones
• Urinary Tract Emergencies

In this session we’ll discuss the management of urolithiasis, considering different types of uroliths and relative treatment approaches. We will cover how to perform a cystotomy, a perineal urethrostomy in cats and urethrostomy in dogs and how to deal with complications of these procedures. In the second part of the week we will cover management strategies for urinary tract emergencies focusing on bypass procedures such as cystostomy tube placement.

Session 6

• Obstruction of the Upper Airway
• Diseases of the Pleural Space of Surgical Interest

In the last session of the course we will focus on the respiratory tract and we will learn how to manage upper airway obstructions, with particular focus on brachycephalic breeds and laryngeal paralysis. We will cover how to perform a temporary tracheostomy and how to manage it. We will then cover pleural space disease and we will focus on pneumothorax and pyothorax. We’ll learn how to distinguish the different types of pleural effusion, and how to drain the thorax from thoracocentesis to thoracostomy tube placement.
