Overview
This course is designed for experienced practitioners who already use endoscopy and want to extend both their technical understanding and clinical decision-making across a wider range of endoscopic procedures.
If you are confident with the basics but want greater clarity when interpreting findings, managing complications, or tackling more challenging gastrointestinal, respiratory and urinary tract cases, this course provides structured guidance grounded in real clinical scenarios.
Using a case-led approach, the course revisits core principles where needed, then builds into more advanced applications across upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy and cystoscopy. Emphasis is placed on patient preparation, image interpretation, biopsy decision-making and understanding how endoscopic findings integrate with histopathology and overall case management.
By the end of the course, you will feel more confident selecting appropriate cases, interpreting complex findings and using endoscopy as a decisive diagnostic and therapeutic tool in advanced first opinion practice.

Session 1: Foundations of Endoscopy
Session A: Introduction to Endoscopy
In this section we will cover the basics of endoscopy, to provide a solid foundation for the following sessions. We will progress to discuss types of endoscope, handling, cleaning and additional equipment (eg, biopsy forceps, types of grabbers).
Session B: Foreign-body Removal
In this section we will discuss various techniques for endoscopic removal of easy and complicated airway, oesophageal and upper gastrointestinal foreign-bodies. We will discuss how to manage challenging oesophageal obstructions.
Session 2: Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Session A: Basics of Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
We will first discuss the indications for upper GI endoscopy, and then spend time talking about how to prepare these patients in order to get the best endoscopic images. We will look at images and videos showing how the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum should appear in a clinically healthy patient.
Session B: Advanced Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
We will progress to look at the range of diseases of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, including how they might appear endoscopically. This will involve discussing challenging cases and unusual histopathology results that you might see from biopsy samples.
Session 3: Lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Session A: Basics of Lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
We will first discuss the indications for lower GI endoscopy, and then spend time talking about how to prepare these patients in order to get the best endoscopic images. We will look at images and videos showing how the ileum, ileocaecocolic-junction and colon should appear in a clinically healthy patient.
Session B: Advanced Lower Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
We will progress to look at the range of diseases of the ileum and colon, including how they might appear endoscopically. This will involve discussing challenging cases and unusual histopathology results that you might see from biopsy samples. We will also cover the process of getting through the ICCJ into the ileum, including examples of Dos and Don’ts of endoscopy in that anatomical area.
Session 4: Bronchoscopy
Session A: Bronchoscopy
In this first section we will discuss indications for performing a bronchoscopy, the approach and complications. We will look at several cases of foreign-body removal to help you understand how to simplify these challenging situations, and things to consider when you have concerns that the foreign-body may have caused significant damage to the airway.
Session B: Bronchoalveolar Lavage
Here we will discuss how to perform a BAL using bronchoscopy; we will talk about the most common cytological findings and how to use those results to treat various lower-airway diseases. We will look at Dos and Don’ts for performing this procedure, including how to minimise the risk of complications.
Session 5: Rhinoscopy
Session A: Basics of Rhinoscopy
This first session will cover the indications for rhinoscopy, as well as the practical approach to the procedure, and the normal appearance of a clinically healthy nasal cavity. We will also talk about the two main techniques for getting nasal biopsies.
Session B: Advanced Rhinoscopy
This second session will cover the range of diseases of the nasal cavity, including their rhinoscopic appearance. We will look at how to manage nasopharyngeal disease, including using balloon-dilation to open a nasopharyngeal stenosis.
Session 6: Cystoscopy
Session A: Cystoscopy
Here we will spend time talking about indications and approach to performing cystoscopy in the canine bitch, which can be extremely challenging. We will discuss the normal appearance of the vestibule, cervix, urethra and bladder, and talk about what abnormalities you might expect to see. We will also talk about how to minimise trauma to the urinary tract during the procedure, and how to take biopsies from lesions within the urinary tract.
Session B: Cases
In this final session we will go through some interesting cases (images, videos, histopathology results) covering what we have learnt throughout the course.
