Emergency CPR Training
As a veterinary nurse you play a key role in the emergency care of patients in a small animal practice. You will often be involved in triage, stabilisation, monitoring, and nursing of patients in critical condition. This course will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills to recognise emergency presentations, initiate immediate nursing care, assist the veterinary surgeon effectively, and manage patients during the critical first hours and beyond.
What you’ll learn:
- Recognise common emergency presentations in small animals (e.g. shock, trauma, respiratory distress, metabolic emergencies)
- Perform effective triage, initial assessment and monitoring
- Initiate emergency nursing interventions using the (e.g. fluid therapy, oxygen support, analgesia)
- Assist with emergency procedures (e.g. feeding tube placement, urinary catheter placement, wound management, central venous catheter placement and CPR)
- Monitor and manage the patient during stabilisation and post-emergency care (e.g. calculating constant rate infusions, monitoring vital signs, alerting to complications)
- Understand infection control and critical care nursing with infectious patients, and those requiring reverse barrier nursing
- Reflect on case situations to improve confidence and decision-making in emergency nursing.
