Programme
Prior Preparation for Anaesthesia Patients
This first session will explore how we can prepare for anaesthesia to aim for problem free procedures. We’ll discuss how we can look at the individual patient and the procedure they are to undergo to identify areas that may cause concern. We will look at the equipment checks we should perform in order to ensure we don’t run into avoidable problems!
What you’ll learn:
- How to plan for anaesthesia cases including ASA scoring, breed and procedure related issues
- How to correctly check anaesthetic machines
- Understand how to correctly select and use endotracheal tubes and breathing systems to prevent issues arising once anaesthesia is underway
Monitoring the Anaesthetised Patient
The purpose of monitoring our patients under anaesthesia is to warn us of any issues that are developing. This session will look at the different types of monitoring techniques which we have available to us, how we use them, and what we can do when we detect something is wrong.
What you’ll learn:
- Why we perform ‘hands on’ monitoring techniques
- How the different types of monitoring instruments work, what they tell us, and what we can do when things go wrong including:
- Pulse oximetry
- Capnography
- Blood pressure
- ECGs
- Temperature
Commonly Used Anaesthetic Medications
This session will look at commonly used anaesthetic drugs and medications; how they act, when and why we would select them, and what outcome we expect from using them. We’ll discuss a range of agents to help us create anaesthesia plans for specific patients.
- Understand the mechanisms of action of anaesthetic agents including:
- Premedicants
- Induction agents
- Maintenance agents
- How we should use fluid therapy in our anaesthesia patients, both pre-operatively, as well as patients under anaesthesia
- Understand commonly used analgesics, and how we select them for our anaesthesia patients
- The importance of pain scoring in order to determine the efficacy of our analgesia protocol
