Session 1

Managing a GDV in Practice

This session will discuss ways to optimize outcome for your GDV cases including stabilization tips, surgical technique and post-operative management. Prognostic factors and merits of prophylactic gastropexy are discussed.

What you’ll learn:

  • Understand fluid resuscitation techniques
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of orogastric intubation and gastric trocharisation
  • Critically evaluate radiographs to differentiate gastric dilatation from GDV
  • Discuss surgical principles and tips to optimize outcome
  • Discuss the merits of prophylactic gastropexy
Session 2

Intestinal Surgery – tips and tricks

This session will allow you to optimise your surgical decision making, techniques and management for acute surgical diseases of the small and large intestine.

What you’ll learn:

  • Improve your interpretation of radiographs and ultrasonography for obstructive lesions of the small and large intestine and gastrointestinal perforation
  • Intraoperative decision making for management of simple and linear foreign bodies, duodenal ulceration, intussusception and intestinal torsion
  • Pros and cons of enteroplication will be discussed
  • Optimise your post-operative care of patients following gastrointestinal surgery
Session 3

How to manage a Haemoabdomen

This session will discuss diagnosis and management of haemoabdomen. Considerations about prognosis in a dog with a ruptured splenic mass will be addressed in addition to tips for optimizing splenectomy technique. Other causes of haemoabdomen and methods of surgical management will be addressed.

What you’ll learn:

  • Optimise patient stabilization prior to surgery for management of haemoabdomen
  • A rational approach to staging investigations and prognostic assessment prior to surgery will be discussed
  • Tips and tricks for improving splenectomy technique will be covered, in addition to management of haemorrhage from other sites
