Programme
Surgical Asepsis and Wound Management
Surgical asepsis is essential to reduce the risk of surgical site infections; consideration needs to be given to all aspects including personnel, patient preparation, the operative field, instruments and the theatre environment. Traumatic wounds need appropriate management before suturing; impediments to healing such as bacterial contamination, foreign material, and necrotic tissue need to be removed before closure should be considered.
What you’ll learn:
- How to prepare the surgical patient
- Hand hygiene and scrubbing up
- Correct draping and theatre protocols
- Initial treatment of traumatic wounds
- Wound lavage and debridement
Suturing: Why, When and How?
There is a bewildering array of suture materials available, but all materials are not suitable for every indication. We’ll explore the selection of suture material most appropriate to the wound being closed, along with how to plan and perform wound closure.
What you’ll learn:
- Suture materials; what’s available
- How to select appropriate suture materials
- Common suture patterns and their indications
- How to plan and perform wound closure
Wound Closure Considerations and Post-operative Care
Some wounds will require more surgical management than just suturing; used correctly, surgical drains can reduce the risk of post-operative complications such as seromas. Once the patient has recovered from anaesthesia, correct post-operative management will lead to improved recovery, shorter hospital stays, and an improved overall result.
What you’ll learn:
- Indications and use of surgical drains
- Techniques to avoid wound tension
- Post-operative dressings
- Post-operative care of the surgical patient
The price includes all 3 sessions, notes and quiz – 8 hours of CPD
