Session 1
Oral Cancer and Mandiblectomy
Oral cancer is relatively common and often best managed by surgery. However the surgery required to resect these types of tumours is often complex. This session will aim to give a good understanding of oral cancer and practical steps how to perform mandiblectomies sucessfully.
What you’ll learn:
- Understand the biological behaviour of the common oral tumours.
- Understand how to appropriately stage oral cancer and select patients for surgery
- How to perform mandiblectomies including segmental, rostral and full hemimandiblectomy
- How to minimise and manage complications related to these procedures.
Maxillectomy and Surgery of the Nasal Cavity
Following from the previous session this session will cover maxillectomy as a treatment for oral cancer of the maxilla. This will include practical hints and tips on performing these procedures. Cancer of the nasal planum often requires surgical management and this session will also cover the indications and techniques these surgeries.
What you’ll learn:
- How to perform maxillectomy procedures
- How to perform caudal maxillectomies including partial oribitectomy
- How to minimise and manage complications related to these procedures.
- Understand the biology of tumours of the nasal planum
- Perform nasal planum resection in dogs and cats
Surgery of the Palate and Reconstructive Surgery of the Head
The most common indications for surgery of the palate are cleft palate repair and oronasal fistulas. Surgery of the palate can be challenging and prone to failure. This session will cover a variety of techniques to help manage defects of the palate.
Tumours of the head and neck are relatively common and are often best managed by surgical resection. However the anatomy of the head is complex and both resection and reconstruction can be challenging. This session will help understand how to perform these surgeries with practical hints and tips.
What you’ll learn:
- Understand the principles of surgery of the palate
- How to perform cleft palate repair
- Understand the principle of cancer resection and reconstructive procedures including subdermal plexus and axial pattern flaps.
- How to reconstruct defects of the lip and cheek
- How to reconstruct skin defects of the head following tumour resections.
