Programme

Session 1

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome: patient assessment

During the first session, the different breeds affected by this condition, and the variation in the condition between the different breeds, will be discussed. Methods of patient assessment, including objective assessment of exercise tolerance will be covered.

Conditions discussed will include:

  • Stenotic nares
  • Elongated soft palate
  • Aberrant nasal turbinates
  • Laryngeal collapse (grades 1 to 3)
  • Aryepiglottic fold entrapment
  • Aspiration pneumonia
Session 2

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome: surgical correction

The second session on brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome will focus on corrective airway surgery, which is most commonly performed in a referral setting.

Conditions discussed will include::

  • Timing of surgery and preoperative management
  • Considerations when hospitalising the brachycephalic patient
  • Anaesthesia considerations
  • Surgical technique for soft palate resection and rhinoplasty
  • Post-operative management and complications
  • Placement and management of a temporary tracheostomy tube
  • Prognosis and long term evaluation
  • Reporting and record keeping of conformational surgery
Session 3

Other common conditions of the brachycephalic patient

This session will discuss the other conditions to which brachycephalic patients are predisposed and which must be taken into consideration during management, then focussing in particular upon those where surgical options are present.

Conditions discussed will include:

  • Dermatological – intertrigo, facial fold pyoderma, screw tail conformation
  • Hiatal hernia and pyloric stenosis
  • Ophthalmological – corneal ulceration
  • Dystocia and Caesarean section
  • Vertebral malformations
