Programme

Session 1  

Anaesthetic equipment and drugs

This session will cover the use of modern anaesthetic equipment, including the machine, airway equipment and breathing systems. Selection of appropriate breathing systems for specific patients will be discussed, and other safety aspects will also be explained. Drugs that are commonly used to provide anaesthesia and analgesia in small animal patients will be considered.

What you’ll learn:

  • Understand commonly used items of anaesthetic equipment, including:
  • The anaesthetic machine
  • Vaporisers
  • Endotracheal tubes
  • Supraglottic airway devices
  • Breathing systems
  • Be aware of safety checks to undertake before using anaesthetic equipment
  • Be familiar with commonly used anaesthetic and analgesic drugs, including those used for:
  • Premedication
  • Induction
  • Maintenance
Session 2  

Preparation for anaesthesia, induction and maintenance

This session looks at the necessary preparations that need to be made prior to anaesthetising patients, including categorising patients according to the ASA physical status classification system. The importance of safety checklists will be explained and some common errors relating to anaesthesia will be examined. Correct and safe induction and maintenance techniques will be explained, as will canine and feline intubation.

What you’ll learn:

  • Know how to prepare equipment and the patient for general anaesthesia
  • Be able to assign an ASA category to different patients
  • Understand the importance of using safety checklists
  • Know how to safely intubate dogs and cats
Session 3  

Peri-anaesthetic monitoring

Monitoring the anaesthetised patient is necessary at all times in the perianaesthetic period, and this session focuses on the parameters that should be observed and the equipment that is used to provide vital information about the physiological status of anaesthetised animals.
The anaesthetic recovery period is of paramount importance, and care of the patient during this time will be considered.

What you’ll learn:

  • Realise the importance of monitoring physical parameters, reflexes and vital signs in conscious, sedated and anaesthetised patients
  • Understand the different types of monitoring equipment that can be used for more advanced monitoring, including:
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Capnography
  • Non-invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • Electrocardiography
  • Be able to provide prescribed supportive therapy during recovery from anaesthesia
