Ocular discharge

Ocular discharge can occur for a variety of reasons and can be a common reason for eye cases presenting in practice. This session will cover approaches to assessing the tear film and tear drainage as well as working through the approach to common cases.

What you’ll learn:

  • Assessing the tear film beyond the Schirmer tear test
  • Current options for managing ocular surface disease
  • How to investigate and manage tear drainage issues
  • Eyelid conditions that can cause a watery eye including entropion, trichiasis, ectopic cilia with a basic overview of their management
 

The painful eye

Many ocular and orbital conditions are painful, assessing signs of ocular discomfort and managing pain as well as the underlying condition will be considered via a case-based approach.

What you’ll learn:

  • Corneal ulceration is it complicated? What to do when an ulcer won’t heal.
  • Exophthalmos – options for investigation in practice
  • How to approach a painful opaque eye
  • Treatment options for glaucoma and lens luxation
 

The blind patient

Sudden onset of blindness can be very emotional for owners, this session will cover approach to assessing vision and how to determine the location of the problem.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why can’t I see the retina and what should I do next?
  • Common retinal causes of blindness
  • Blindness beyond the eye – localising the cause of blindness in a logical way
