Programme

Session 1

Exotic small mammals – inc Rabbits

Develop confidence treating rabbits and other exotic small mammals in general practice. The session will cover triage and diagnostic approach to common presentations. There will be an update on therapeutics.

What you’ll learn:

  • Performing an effective clinical examination
  • Be comfortable blood sampling and placing IV cannulas
  • Diagnostics – radiography, point of care ultrasound, clinical pathology
  • Review therapeutic options for common conditions
Session 2

Avian

A session focusing on triage and emergency care of avian species in practice. Including a section on back-yard poultry.

What you’ll learn:

  • Feel confident handling and examining birds in practice
  • Emergency stabilisation – fluids, nutritional support
  • Selecting appropriate analgesia for birds
  • Performing diagnostics- bloods, cytology, radiography
  • Treating backyard poultry in general practice
Session 3

Reptiles

Following a brief review of reptile husbandry and the key elements of history taking – the session will discuss triage, emergency care and therapeutics in reptiles.

What you’ll learn:

  • Feel proficient performing a critical evaluation of husbandry and how it relates to common clinical presentations
  • A review of therapeutics, including appropriate antibiotic usage
  • Emergency treatment of reptiles – including fluid therapy, nutritional support
  • Treatment of common emergency presentations
