- Dogs and cats presenting with bleeding disorders can be a daunting prospect, and it is vital to have a logical approach to their diagnosis and management. In session one we will review haemostasis and then discuss the approach to and management of a primary haemostatic disorder. In session two, and using a selection of case-based examples, we will discuss the major disorders of secondary haemostasis and how a diagnosis can be made quickly and easily. In session three we will revise the principles of blood group testing and cross-matching, and then discuss a practical approach to blood transfusion medicine.

The diagnosis and management of disorders of primary haemostasis
What you’ll learn:

- Describe the clinical signs associated with disorders of primary haemostasis
- Select appropriate tests to investigate disorders of primary haemostasis
- Describe the aetiology and pathogenesis of common disorders of primary haemostasis
- Outline the management of dogs and cats with disorders of primary haemostasis
Session 2
The diagnosis and management of disorders of secondary haemostasis
What you’ll learn:
- Describe the clinical signs associated with disorders of secondary haemostasis
- Select appropriate tests to investigate disorders of secondary haemostasis
- Describe the aetiology and pathogenesis of common disorders of secondary haemostasis
- Explain the term “disseminated intravascular coagulation”, and outline how it is diagnosed and treated
- Outline the management of dogs and cats with disorders of secondary haemostasis
Session 3
Blood transfusion medicine
What you’ll learn:
- Describe the basis of blood group systems in dogs and cats
- Explain the principles of blood group testing and cross-matching
- Describe the aims and indications for blood transfusion
- Describe how to take blood from a donor and administer a blood transfusion
- List the signs of a transfusion reaction
- Formulate a therapeutic plan for a transfusion reaction
