Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common endocrinopathy in dogs and cats worldwide, with a significant proportion of patients developing diabetic complications and/or being difficult to stabilise. DM cases are also the most common endocrine emergencies presenting to primary care practitioners. In the majority of dogs, DM is a lifelong diagnosis so every effort should be made to understand all aspects of that individual’s diabetes and try and create a robust, sustainable management programme that is suitable both for the patient and owner. In cats, however, DM is increasingly recognised as a treatable disease with up to 85% of cases achieving remission. When managing diabetic cases it is important to understand the owner’s goals and not become too ‘number focused’ relying on the glucose or fructosamine levels to drive management changes.
