Session 1: Wednesday 15th November   2-4pm (UK time)

Trauma Update

This session we will cover new techniques and strategies to aid with fracture repair along with novel and modified implants for stabilisation. As well updates on fracture fixation we will also cover new ways to assist with the diagnosis and support for the trauma patient.

What you’ll learn:

  • Understand the biomechanics of locking plates and titanium implants
  • Discover the emergence of anatomy specific implants
  • Understand how MIPO can improve fracture healing and minimise patient trauma
  • Learn how intraoperative imaging with fluoroscopy and arthroscopy can improve fracture reduction and alignment
  • Review strategies to triage trauma patients and provide care to soft tissue wounds
Session 2: Wednesday 29th November   2-4pm (UK time)

Developmental Disease Update

As our understanding of canine joint and bone diseases have improved; our ways of managing these conditions has progressed over the last decade. New implant designs have helped bring these theories to reality.

What you’ll learn:

  • Review of cartilage resurfacing techniques
  • Demonstrate examples of total joint replacements: hip, stifle, ankle, elbow, shoulder
  • Understand osteotomy procedures to alter joint mechanics
  • Appraise our understanding of joint pathology and how this is changing our management strategies
Session 3: Wednesday 13th December   2-4pm (UK time)

Spinal and MSK Soft Tissue Update

As well as joints and the long bones; orthopaedic surgeons commonly are involved in cases that have musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries or require spinal surgery.
We will also finish with a brief insight into some of the non-clinical updates that the profession and society are seeing that could affect a veterinary orthopaedic surgeon; such as responsibility, accountability, and ethics.

What you’ll learn:

  • Discover new implants and techniques for instrumented spinal surgery
  • Understand how regenerative medicine with stem cells and platelet rich plasma can aid tissue healing
  • Review various ligament replacement materials and bone anchors to allow MSK soft tissue reconstruction
  • Reveal the importance of surgical registries; such as the total hip and canine cruciate registry
  • Discussion on ethics, accountability, and responsibility of orthopaedic surgeons
