Programme
Session 1
Foundations of Canine Behaviour and Learning
Understanding who dogs are, how they learn and how they communicate are essential foundations for working with them in a clinical setting, for advising clients and for knowing when to refer cases for behavioural treatment. This first webinar will look at all these areas and also cover the vital aspects of early learning in puppies and how all this information can be used for appropriate socialisation.
What you’ll learn:
- Canine ethology
- How animals learn
- Dog-dog and dog-human communication
- Early development and sensitive periods
- Tailoring socialisation based on knowledge learned so far
Applied Canine Behaviour and Learning
This second webinar will build on the applied aspects which were introduced in the first session. We will look at how the foundation knowledge can be applied to advising owners how to appropriately educate their puppy to help them grow up into a well adjusted adult dog. We will also address various effects on learning and how these should and can be taken into account in various contexts such as general day to day experiences, visits to the surgery and in puppy classes. Using knowledge of learning and behaviour we will look at how to address various common problem behaviours in puppies.
What you’ll learn:
- Using foundations from session 1 in the veterinary surgery and in advising owners
- Choosing a puppy
- Environmental effects on learning
- Running puppy classes at veterinary surgeries
- First aid advice for common problem puppy behaviours
Canine adolescence and case studies
This final session will look at the older puppy and changes that occur during adolescence. This is the most common time for owners to relinquish dogs and some simple advice in the early days can prove extremely beneficial to the long term success of the dog-owner relationship. This session will also include some case studies of some more serious puppy behaviour presentations with appropriate first aid advice to help delegates advise owners prior to referral.
What you’ll learn:
- Choosing whether and when to neuter
- On-going brain development socialisation
- Changes in behaviour during adolescence
- First aid advice for more serious problem puppy behaviours
- Case studies to illustrate learning points from the course
The price includes all 3 sessions, notes and quiz – 8 hours of CPD
