Session 1: Friday 17th January 2025 2pm-4pm (UK time)
Planning and Preparing
This session will discuss how patient and case evaluation will affect the anaesthetic plan and review different protocols for more complicated case management. Geriatric and paediatric patients will be considered alongside endocrine disorders and emergency anaesthesia for caesarean section and gastric dilatation and volvulus. This will include evaluation of fluid rates for anaesthesia and anaesthetic breathing system selection as well as pharmaceutical considerations.

- Understand how the patient and case assessment changes the anaesthetic plan
- Evaluate anaesthetic plans for a variety of anaesthetic cases
- Define what is involved in case based anaesthetic planning and preparation
Advanced anaesthetic monitoring & ventilation
This session will evaluate the usefulness of some of the electronic monitoring for different case scenarios and give an overview of canography, pulse oximetry, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring alongside blood gas analysis and central venous pressure. Ventilation will also be covered using a case based approach.
What you’ll learn:
- Evaluate the usefulness of electronic monitoring for different case scenarios
- Understand how electronic monitoring equipment works and the pitfalls
- Review normal values for electronic monitoring and what abnormalities may indicate
- Understand simple blood gas analysis results
- Review cases which may require ventilation including how, when and why
Multimodal analgesia for anaesthesia
This session will look at analgesic planning and the suitability for different techniques on a case based evaluation. It goes beyond the premedication and will get you thinking about what else might be utilised especially for break-through pain.
What you’ll learn:
- Consider and create analgesic plans for a variety of scenarios
- Understand the local blocks available and their suitability for different procedures
- Evaluate the analgesic drugs available
- Understand the use of constant rate infusions including the pharmaceuticals and calculations.
