Session 1: Mentoring Principles and Why Self-Care is Important as a Mentor

What you’ll learn:
The first part of this module will cover the cornerstones of effective mentoring by helping you understand what mentoring is, how it differs from coaching and teaching, as well as why you are likely to be best placed to become a mentor. We will look at setting the tone, the social contract between mentor and mentee before diving into the practicalities of mentoring. The second part of the module will look at the importance of self-care in mentoring, providing practical tools to help ensure you have the emotional and cognitive capacity to support others.

Session 2 – Managing perfectionism and Imposter Syndrome alongside understanding compassion fatigue

What you’ll learn:
Many of our new graduates are taught how to be professionals, however, they are rarely helped to navigate their emotions, social needs, vulnerability and values within the context of being a professional. We will help you understand how to provide this support by discovering what we mean by perfectionism and imposter syndrome, why they can be detrimental, and how to practically support mentees.
- Why perfectionism exists in veterinary medicine and how it relates to imposter syndrome.
- Recognising when it exists in our mentees and how to support them in navigating perfectionism and imposter syndrome in the workplace.
- Practical skills for self-compassion which are useful for both mentor and mentees.
Session 3: Effective communication, listening and managing difficult conversations, as a mentor

What you’ll learn:
Communication is more than the words we say yet is vital for a successful mentor/mentee relationship. In this module we will discover the importance of language, tone, pitch and listening in building rapport with your mentee and creating a successful relationship through effective communication. We will follow this by discussing how to support your mentee through difficult conversations they may experience including differences of opinion, complaints, responding to error or setting boundaries.

- How to navigate difficult conversations and use the tools to support mentees.
