This online course will support learners to bridge the gap between exercise science and neurological rehabilitation.
Programme
Assessment and programme planning
We will focus on the measurement and assessment of physical performance. We will briefly consider laboratory-based measurement methods and translate these to the real-world assessment of physical performance in the clinical setting. Published guidelines for exercise interventions amongst neurological populations will be reviewed and applied to training principles to enable the learner to plan an effective exercise programme.
Intended learning outcomes:
- Assess cardiovascular condition and muscular performance in the clinical setting
- Identify outcome measurement tools relevant to exercise for the neurological population
- Apply published guidelines and training principles to exercise for the neurological population
- Plan an exercise programme underpinned by training principles
- Understand the physiological responses and adaptations to cardiovascular and muscular training
Exercise interventions for people with neurological impairment
We will focus on real world case studies to illustrate how physiotherapists can address the challenges associated with exercise interventions for people with neurological impairment. Practical solutions will be explored and illustrated.
Intended learning outcomes:
- Apply relevant research findings to real world scenarios
- Develop innovative exercise solutions for people with neurological impairment across a range of settings
- Integrate exercise within a wider programme of rehabilitation
- Monitor exercise intensity and be able to progress or regress an exercise intervention
- Understand the role of assistive technologies in exercise and rehabilitation
Developing sustainable support and delivery pathways for the neurological population
The final session will focus on psychosocial factors which influence exercise behaviours and we will explore strategies aimed at improving engagement with exercise. Current models of service delivery will be explored and the learner will be encouraged to generate progressive ideas to optimise long term engagement with exercise.
Intended learning outcomes:
- Understand the barriers and motivators for exercise uptake amongst people with neurological impairment
- Apply behaviour change principles to the uptake of exercise in neurology
- Consider the challenges and opportunities associated with exercise referral schemes for people with neurological changes
- Explore models of service delivery to optimise long term engagement
- Recognise the inter-relationship between exercise, physical activity and participation
The price includes all 3 sessions, notes and quiz – 8 hours of CPD
