Spinal Surgery

A two-day practical course designed for experienced small animal surgeons who want to build a solid foundation in spinal surgery and decision-making. Led by Dr Toby Gemmill, this clinically focused training combines lectures, case discussions, and wet labs to help you assess spinal patients with confidence, plan investigations effectively, and carry out the most commonly required surgical procedures.

What You’ll Learn:

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Examine and assess spinal patients more confidently
  • Interpret neurological findings and explain them clearly to owners
  • Plan and undertake diagnostic investigations with greater certainty
  • Perform key spinal techniques in a structured wet lab environment
  • Recognise and manage common post-operative complications

Practical Skills Covered:

During the wet labs you will practise:

  • Surgical approaches to the cervical, thoracolumbar, and lumbosacral spine
  • Thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy and disc fenestration
  • Cervical ventral slot and disc fenestration
  • Lumbosacral dorsal laminectomy

Clinical Conditions Discussed:

The course will focus on intervertebral disc disease, the most common spinal condition seen in practice, and will also discuss:

  • Atlantoaxial subluxation
  • Wobbler syndrome
  • Degenerative lumbosacral stenosis
  • Spinal trauma
