- In this webinar series we will discuss the main topics related with diagnostic imaging that are important for veterinary nurses working in small animal practice. In the first session we’ll focus on the basic principles of radiography and how to obtain good quality x-rays. We’ll also discuss orthopaedic x-rays, including examples of common orthopaedic diseases that can be diagnosed with X-rays. In the second session we’ll talk about thoracic and abdominal radiography. You’ll learn the technical principles to obtain images of good diagnostic quality and get familiarized with the normal radiographic appearance of the thorax and abdomen. We’ll also discuss examples of common thoracic and abdominal diseases that can be diagnosed with radiographs. In the third and last session we’ll cover the essentials of ultrasound scanning that are relevant to nurses and discuss how to do a point of care ultrasound.
Programme
Session 1
Essential principles of Radiography and Orthopaedic Radiography
What you’ll learn:
- Review what equipment you need to take good quality x-rays
- Learn how to correctly prepare and restrain patients before taking x-rays
- Understand the basic principles of good radiographic technique
- Discuss the essentials of radiation safety
- Review the various radiographic views you can obtain in different orthopaedic cases
- Become familiar with the normal radiographic appearance of different joints and see examples of common orthopaedic diseases
Session 2
Thoracic and Abdominal Radiography
What you’ll learn:
- Discuss the technical aspects of thoracic radiography
- Learn the basics of interpretation of thoracic x-rays – Recognize what is normal, identify different types of lung pattern and look for signs of heart disease.
- Become familiar with particular thoracic diseases that require special nursing & anaesthesia care
- Understand how to obtain good quality abdominal x-rays
- Learn what is normal and become familiarized with common radiographic signs of abdominal disease
Session 3
Essential Principles of Ultrasound for Nurses & POCUS – Point of Care Ultrasound
What you’ll learn:
- Learn how an ultrasound machine works and the basic principles of how to use it
- Explore the key clinical applications of ultrasound in everyday veterinary practice.
- Review the essential elements of an effective ultrasound room setup.
- Learn how to prepare and appropriately support patients during ultrasound examinations.
- Understand the steps required to assist vets perform ultrasound-guided sampling safely and efficiently.
- Gain a practical introduction to the principles of interpreting ultrasound images and identifying clinically relevant findings.
- Learn how to perform a point-of-care ultrasound – POCUS
