This entirely online course in Abdominal Ultrasound is specifically designed for vets in practice who want to advance their scanning skills and interpretation to the next level. It’s a general level course, suitable for beginners and those with some experience. Through recorded sessions, discussions of how to obtain and interpret scanning images and videos and how to apply these to cases that you’re likely to see in practice, you’ll be able to use your new knowledge and skills from Day One of the course.

Session 1: Getting the most out of your ultrasound machine.

The diagnostic usefulness of ultrasound is very dependent on image quality. In this session we’ll give you the knowledge and confidence that you need to optimise your ultrasound images.


Session 2: Ultrasonography of the canine and feline liver and spleen.

Here we’ll familiarise you with the imaging techniques, the normal ultrasound appearance and the ultrasound appearance of commonly encountered pathology in the liver and spleen


Session 3: Ultrasonography of the canine and feline GI Tract.

We’ll familiarise you with the imaging techniques, the normal ultrasound appearance and the ultrasound appearance of commonly encountered pathology in the GI tract


Session 4: Ultrasonography of the canine and feline urogenital tract.

We’ll familiarise you with the imaging techniques, the normal ultrasound appearance and the ultrasound appearance of commonly encountered pathology in the urogenital tract


Session 5: Ultrasonography of the canine and feline pancreas, adrenals and abdominal lymph nodes.

In this session we’ll guide you round the ‘landmarks’ – including the large abdominal vessels- used to consistently locate the pancreas, adrenals and lymph nodes. We’ll familiarise you with the normal ultrasound appearance of these structures and improve your confidence in recognising the typical appearance of commonly encountered pathology.


Session 6: Introduction to Ultrasound Guided Sampling Techniques.

Many of the abnormalities identified during ultrasound examination of the canine and feline abdomen are non-specific. For example, multiple nodules identified in the liver may be due to benign nodular hyperplasia or multifocal or metastatic neoplasia. In this session we’ll guide you through the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of ultrasound-guided sampling techniques.

As the course is online, you can take part from anywhere in the world and still enjoy access to the course tutor for discussion and questions.
