Advanced Small Animal Ultrasound

This course is suitable for you if you‘re a general practitioner who already has experience performing an abdominal ultrasound and would like to elevate your skills in evaluating the more challenging abdominal structures and at performing ultrasound-guided sampling. You’ll also learn how to use ultrasound for the assessment of the thorax (except heart) and neck, increasing the range of applications of this imaging modality that you can offer your patients. This two day Advanced Small Animal Ultrasound course will consist of a combination of lectures and several hands on practical sessions with the guidance of the course tutors.

What you’ll learn:

  • Become more proficient at identifying adrenal glands and pancreas, familiarising yourself with the different anatomical landmarks used to find these small organs and being able to differentiate normal appearance from pathological changes
  • Gain improved confidence on evaluating difficult areas like the pylorus and urinary bladder trigone
  • Identification of the major abdominal lymph nodes using the adequate anatomical landmarks and being able to differentiate normal appearance from pathological changes affecting these structures
  • Introduction to Doppler techniques and the identification of portosystemic shunts with ultrasound
  • Decide which ultrasound-guided tissue sampling technique is indicated for your patient, and become confident at performing ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirates
  • Become familiar with the normal appearance of lung and being able to identify thoracic wall, pleural, pulmonary and mediastinal disease using ultrasound
  • Identification of thyroids, parathyroids and cranial neck lymph nodes and recognise the typical ultrasound appearance of common diseases that can affect these structures.
