Two Day Highly Practical Course
14 Hours of CPD
“Excellent practical based course with all the relevant theoretical teaching as well. More confident in the basics of Orthopaedics now. Very good for practical and theory from an up to date specialist in the field”
Are you unsure where to start with small animal orthopaedics? Tired of wrestling with wires? Plagued by pins and exasperated with External Fixation? Fret no longer – we have your solution! Our hugely popular Introduction to Orthopaedics Course is here.
This highly practical two day course is specifically designed for you. Seminars and interactive sessions are combined with hands-on wet labs during which you are guided by experienced and approachable tutors. We’ll take you step by step through the basic skills you will need to develop your confidence and orthopaedic patient care.
What you’ll learn:
- Spotting lameness – video cases
- Get confident with palpating joint effusions and performing arthrocentesis
- Don’t be scared to chip in on skeletal radiographs ever again – we’ll go through the common scenarios so you know what you are looking for.
- Tools of the trade and how to use them – retractors, elevators, bone holding forceps, chucks, saws the lot. Knowing what you need and how to use them effectively is key and will make a huge difference to struggling surgeons.
- Get comfortable with pins and wires – Often seen as basic bits of kit but they can cause no end of frustration. We’ll have you inserting K wires and tightening cerclage like a pro.
- Learn the basics of external fixation and using plates and screws. You’ll start off with simpler fixation on models before trying some basic scenarios in wet labs.
- Femoral Head and Neck Excision (FHNE). The surgical approach to the hip can be challenging for inexperienced and more experienced surgeons alike until you understand which tissue planes need to be identified and incised.
- Learning how to do this will save you a lot of stress and greatly reduce tissue trauma. An oscillating saw is by far and away the best technique for FHNE and on this course you will learn the craniolateral approach to the hip approach and how to effectively perform FHNE using a powered saw. You will never consider doing this procedure any other way.
- The key is to get the hang of the basics and build your confidence and orthopaedic ‘touch’ from there.
- Walking before you try to run with orthopaedics (sorry!) will pay you back handsomely.
- You never know…you may get to looking forward to picking up that drill!
