Programme

Session 1

Drug overdoses and poisonings

This session will cover intoxications with drugs commonly used in veterinary and human medicine as well as drug overdoses. This will cover diagnosis and treatment of intoxications caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, paracetamol, pyrethrins and baclofen.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to diagnose and treat NSAID, paracetamol, pyrethrin and baclofen toxicities
  • Use of specific tools for decontamination including skin decontamination, emesis induction, gastric lavage and the use of activated charcoal and cathartics. When are they indicated, what are their risks and how to proceed with them
  • Other treatments including therapeutic plasma exchange or dialysis and options in practice
  • When to consider referral
Session 2

Food intoxications

This session will cover intoxication due to ingestion of normal foods that are toxic in cats and dogs. This will cover diagnosis and treatment of intoxications caused by onion/garlic, mycotoxins, chocolate, grapes/raisins and xylitol.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to diagnose and treat toxicities caused by onion/garlic, mycotoxins, chocolate, grapes/raisins and xylitol
  • Use of intralipid therapy. When is it indicated, what are the risks and how to administer it
  • When to consider referral
Session 3

Other common intoxications

In this session we will cover the diagnosis and treatment of further really common intoxications including those caused by rodenticides, ethylene glycol, methaldehyde and marihuana.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to diagnose and treat intoxications caused by rodenticides, ethylene glycol, methaldehyde and marijuana
  • Other treatments including the use of fomepizole or ethanol for ethylene glycol intoxication and how to administer it
  • The use of different plasma products to treat rodenticide toxicities depending on the patient’s clinical presentation and time of exposure
  • When to consider referral
