Programme
Pre-Match Preparation of the Medical Team and Playing Staff
Even though the match might not start for another 4 hours, your role as a physiotherapist is already in full flow preparing both yourself and the medical network around you as well as the players for the match ahead and all possible injury scenarios which may occur before, during and after the match. From the last minute fitness test to pre-match warm up, this first lecture in the mini-series will cover every aspect of what your job may entail, much of which will not have been covered on your degree course and beyond. Even though the lecturer, David Fevre has worked in professional sport for over 25 years some new scenario often develops and it needs an immediate response to solve the issue to ensure the mind of the player is focused on the match ahead. That is what makes this job so exciting!
What you’ll learn:
- How to create a pre match fitness test to ensure the player is physically and mentally ready to play a part in the forthcoming game
- The role of the physiotherapist and medical team on match day
- The medical room structure
- The structure of the supportive medical network in case of injury
- The Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in case of injury
- About the preparation of medical equipment
- What preparation is needed for the individual player
- About pre match nutrition/fluid
- The role of the pre match warm up
Acute Pitch Side Injury Management
As a physiotherapist working in sport, you have a duty of care to yourself as a professional, the player-whether they are injured or not, the medical team you work within or lead and your employer, the club (if you are in a paid position). It is therefore essential you have the appropriate qualifications and knowledge to deal with any injury scenario, which may be life threatening in some cases, before agreeing to walk the touchline and carry the medical bag in a competitive match. Your physiotherapy degree provides you with no information for what to expect in the match scenario and it is essential you gain the correct knowledge and practical skills to work within the medical team in an acute injury situation. The second part of this mini-series will cover many of the common injury possibilities and provide you with the essential knowledge needed. It is important to stress that this then needs to be followed up with precise, accurate, regular and repetitive practise of the manual skills needed to complete this clinical role in the acute sporting environment.
What you’ll learn:
- Conduct a competent scene assessment and safe approach to an injured player
- Conduct a competent primary survey of the injury, recognising the need to preserve the life of the player as foremost
- Assess and address accordingly a possible life threatening injury
- Recognise and manage a possible spinal injury
- Conduct a competent secondary survey if possible in the outdoor environment
- Recognise the signs and symptoms if the injury situation should deteriorate
- Recognise the most common, serious orthopaedic and musculo-skeletal injuries
- Safely extricate a player from the field of play to a secondary medical environment
- Be aware of the medical equipment to assist in the aforementioned injury scenarios
Post-Match Injury Management and Player Care
A positive result at the end of the game for the medical team is no injuries and hopefully a win out on the pitch. At least if an injury does occur has it been correctly managed acutely? The next stage is to put a plan in place for the future management in order to promote recovery. In many cases the secondary survey may not happen until the injured player is in the medical room away from the elements and watching crowd. This third and final part of the mini-series covers various post-injury/match scenarios and helps the delegate to plan the next stage in the recovery process. The medical room and equipment need cleaning and putting away ready to go again when the next match comes around.
What you’ll learn:
- Carry out the secondary survey process in the medical room
- Use the Emergency Action Plan in injury scenarios
- Utilise various medical systems in order to support and assist the first aid management on the pitch
- Carry out various orthopaedic clinical tests to help diagnose musculo skeletal issues
- Assist in post-match player recovery
- Recognise the role of the other medical professionals within the medical team
- Recap, reflect and evaluate injury situations experienced out on the pitch to develop experience for you and the medical team in the future
- Prepare the medical room and equipment for the next match
