- In this three session online mini series you will be introduced to the fundamentals of orthopaedics. The first session will concentrate on the assessment of lameness, the orthopaedic examination, arthritis and miscellaneous orthopaedic conditions. The second session is an introduction to fracture surgery and the third an introduction to joint surgery. At the end of the mini series you should feel more confident to approach orthopaedic cases with improved decision making. Finally, you should be able to tackle basic orthopaedic surgeries avoiding technical errors and therefore complications.
Programme
Session 1: Monday 31st March 2025 2pm-4pm (UK time)
Lameness Assessment, Arthritis and Miscellaneous Orthopaedics
What you’ll learn:
- How to recognise hind limb and fore limb lameness and differentiate neurological diseases
- How to perform a good orthopaedic examination
- How to diagnose and manage arthritis
- How to diagnose and successfully manage common non-surgical orthopaedic conditions, including panosteitis, hypertrophic osteodystrophy and craniomandibular osteopathy, puppy carpal laxity syndrome
- How to diagnose and treat common muscle and tendon disorders
Session 2: Monday 14th April 2025 2pm-4pm (UK time)
Introduction to Fracture Surgery – What Should I Do in First Opinion Practice?
What you’ll learn:
- Fracture biology and biomechanics
- Open fractures – what to do
- External coaptation – when to consider
- Internal fracture fixation- pins, wires, plates and screws
- External skeletal fixation
- The decision-making process and surgical treatment of common fractures, including humeral condylar fractures, radius/ulna fractures, pelvic fractures, femoral fractures, tibial fractures, physeal fractures
- Delayed, non- and mal- unions
Session 3: Monday 28th April 2025 2pm-4pm (UK time)
Introduction to Joint Surgery – Getting Comfortable with Common Joint Diseases
What you’ll learn:
- Diagnosis and decision-making for surgical and non-surgical common articular problems
- Osteochondrosis
- How to recognise and treat elbow dysplasia
- Hip conditions and how to treat them
- How and when to treat cranial cruciate ligament disease, including meniscal injuries
- How to manage patellar luxation
